AFTA (Asean Free Trade Area) or often referred to as free trade in ASEAN was inaugurated in 1992, is one of the collective efforts of ASEAN member countries to reduce trade costs among members. AFTA will be in place beginning in 2010. The goal is to develop a network of industry trade among ASEAN members.
Implementation mechanism is to reduce import duties between members of 0-5% and to eliminate quantitative restrictions (import quotas) between fellow members. The impact of free trade is more and more imported goods will go to Indonesia in terms of both the type and quantity.
